Check Safety Guide

Checks may feel old-fashioned, but they’re still widely used — and unfortunately, they remain a top target for fraud. In fact, while check usage has declined, check fraud has nearly doubled in recent years, making it more important than ever to protect yourself.

Criminals look for easy opportunities, and an unprotected check can provide everything they need to steal your money and identity. The good news? A few simple habits can significantly reduce your risk.

Why Checks Are Valuable to Scammers

A single check contains sensitive personal and financial information, including:

  • Your name and address

  • Your account and routing numbers

  • Your signature

  • Payment details in the memo line

Scammers often steal checks from mailboxes, alter them using chemicals (“check washing”), or use the information to create fake checks with modern printers and software.

How Check Fraud Happens

  • Check Theft Mailboxes are frequently targeted, especially outgoing mail with checks inside.

  • Check Washing Criminals use chemicals to erase ink and rewrite checks for higher amounts or different payees.

  • Check Forging With your routing and account numbers, scammers can create counterfeit checks that look legitimate.

Check Safety Tips: How to Protect Yourself

If you use checks, follow these best practices:

  • Use permanent gel ink so details can’t be erased.

  • Fill in all spaces completely to prevent alterations.

  • Never include personal information like your Social Security number or phone number.

  • Review your accounts regularly for unauthorized transactions.

  • Examine cleared checks to confirm payees and amounts.

Whenever possible, consider using digital payment options through online or mobile banking for faster, safer transactions.
